New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party denied the allegation made against them that the earstwhile Akhilesh Yadav government had "shielded" its rape accused minister Gayatri Parajapati, arrested today in Lucknow after being in the run for nearly a month. SP General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav wondered if it was "the first ever arrest made or weather the accused is like President Obama to be talked about", questioning the 'hype' over the arrest.
The tainted former minister ran for the Assembly polls from Amethi, but lost his seat.
Prajapati was arrested in the state capital today, four days after the change of guard in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP emerged victorious winning over 300 seats in the recently held assembly polls.
"Law was also following its course in Uttar Pradesh. Every effort was made to arrest Prajapati.
"He was unavailale. Now the police has arrested him. There was no effort made to sheild him," Yadav told reporters at Parliament premises.
Following a Supreme Court directive, a non-bailable warrent was issued against Prajapati. Also, his passport has been impounded and airports across the country were alerted about the possibility of his trying to escape the country. He was booked on February 17 along with six others for allegedly gang-raping a woman and attempting to rape her minor daughter.
He has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
However, all of the six other accused in the case hsve already been arrested by the police. They include two of the minister's close aides and a security guard. Three were arrested yesterday in Lucknow and the police have also brought Prajapati's son, Aurag Prajapati, a businessman, from Amethi to Lucknow to question him.
