Guwahati: Nine Blasts took place in Manipur and Assam on Thursday as nation was celebrating its 68th Republic Day. No injuries have been reported yet.
According to sources, three blasts have been reported in Charaideo district,two were from Sivasagar district, one each from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district have been reported.all in eastern Assam where the Paresh Baruah faction of the insurgent group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has a strong base.
"We have received reports of seven low-intensity blasts. There were no casualty in the incidents," Assam's Director-General of Police Mukesh Sahay, told. Police suspect the hand of ULFA in the incidents.
The blast at Angera in Charaideo was apparently the most powerful. It gouged out a deep crater at the site. The bomb in Dibrugarh was planted near a drain, 500 m from the official Republic Day function. It went off even while celebrations were on. The twin blasts in Manipur were reported from Imphal East district one in Mantripukhri and another near Manipur College.
Several insurgent outfits of the Northeast, including the Paresh Baruah faction of ULFA, had given a joint call for a boycott of Republic Day celebrations in the region. They urged people to stay indoors to ensure a total bandh.
