Maoist-turned-gangster Mohammed Nayeemuddin alias Nayeem, involved in several cases including the murder of a former IPS officer, was shot dead in a police encounter at Shadnagar, about 50 km from Hyderabad, on Monday.

According to police sources, a team of Greyhounds, elite anti-extremist force of the Telangana police, surrounded a house at Shadnagar in the morning on a tip off that some terrorists were hiding in the place. They also vacated the residents in the surrounding houses as a precautionary measure.

An exchange of fire ensued between Nayeem and his accomplices and the police. After about 10 minutes, police entered the hideout and found Nayeem in a pool of blood. His accomplices are thought to have fled the spot. The police recovered a few weapons from the spot. Further details are awaited.

Nayeem, who belonged to Bhongir town in Nalgonda district, worked in Maoist party (then Peoples War Group) in late 80s. He was instrumental in the killing of IPS officer K S Vyas on January 27, 1993. He was later arrested, came out on bail and turned a gangster. He and his gang were involved in land settlements, real estate dealings, illegal arms supply and extortions. He was involved in over 100 cases, besides 20 murder cases including that of surrendered Maoist Sambasivudu, his brother Ramulu, another ex-Maoist Patlolla Goverdhan Reddy and civil liberties leader Purushottam.
