Mumbai: Lokayukta visits Dahisar to assesses extent of destruction to mangroves

Mumbai : State�Lokayukta Retd justice M Tahiliani on Friday visited Dahisar to ascertain the extent of mangrove destruction in the area.

Harish Pande, Welfare Forum said Tahiliani visited a 5- acre wetland area at Saraswati complex, Anand Nagar, Dahisar East where themangroves have been destroyed and the land reclaimed for a parking lot for private tourist buses.

"We had filed a complaint with the BMC and the police in April last year.

While the BMC immediately issued a notice under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, the police took over six months to file a First Information Report," he said.

Residents also informed the Lokayukta of two more sites in Dahisar and Borivali where such destruction has been carried out.

The illegal reclamation by a private cab service provider is already being heard by the Lokayukta.

"In case of a 3-acre plot also in Dahisar East it is exactly a year but the police are still to file an FIR," said Pande. Citizens can complain against inaction of the authorities before the Lokayukta.
