New Delhi: Over 20 people were killed and dozens injured after a speeding Tirupati-bound truck first hit an electric pole and then rammed into a crowded market at Yerpedu in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
The incident happened in Yerupedu market area under Srikalahasti division of the district, some 20 kilometers away from Tirupati.
According to an eyewitness, the driver of the truck coming from Srikalahasti abnd bound for Tirupati lost control of his vehicle on the highway. The truck hit an electri pole first and them rammed into a busy market were people were standing. While around 6 people lost their lives in the collision, the others died of electrocuting.
The injured were rushed to a near by SVR Ruia Government GENERAL Hospital in Tirupati and the government hospital of Srikalhasti. The number of casualties are expected to go up as several of the injured are critical.
People were waiting outside Chittor police station at Yerpedu to submit their applications.
While, the Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa has expressed shock over the incident.
He spoke to the Tirupati Superintendent of Police and instructed that those injured be extended the necessary medical treatment, an official said.
YSR Congress leader Jagran Mohan Reddy has also condoled the loss of lives in the mishap. He has demanded that rescue efforts be expedited and immediate medical attention be provided to the injured.
