New Delhi: Several BJP MLAs from Eastern Uttar Pradesh have offered to vacate there seats to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, a five-time MP from Gorakhpur. Ministers are likely to meet Yogi Adityanath for a discussion after he meeting with Prime minister Narendr Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah for a discussion in Delhi today.
Adityanath left for Delhi this morning to take part in the meeting of BJP Parlimentary Board, a BJP pokesperson said here.
"The meeting of the BJP's Parliamentary Board is being held in Delhi today. Apart from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, his counterparts from Manipur, Goa and Uttara Khand are also participating in the meeting," UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi told PTI.
As per norms, the chief minister and ministers, not being member of the state legislature, are required to become members of either house of legislature. It is still not clear if Adityanath will prefer to be elected to the assembly of follow the example of its predecessors Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati, who preferred the seat of MLCs than becoming MLAs.
Fateh Bhadur Singh, the BJP MLA from Campierganj, about 34 kilometers from Gorakhpur, confirmed that he has offered to quit his seat. Singh, son of former UP chief minister Vir Bahadur Singh, said, "I have made the offer to ensure progress of Purvanchal. People Campeirganj will feel proud if Yogiji decides to make it his own."
Vir Bahadur represented Paniyara seat in UP assembly out of which Campierganj was later carved out post boundries in 2012. Fateh Bahadur is not the only one. About a dozen other lawmakers from west UP and few west too plan to offer their seats to Yogi, a trend with most sitting chief ministers.
Uttar Pradesh has a bicameral legislature.
In 2012 the then Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, after becoming the chief minister of the state, was inundated with offers from his party lawmakers willing to vacate their seats for him. Akhilesh, however, decided not to become an MLA, preferred to become a member of legislative council instead. "If becoming MLC, then none of my party MLAs will be better if the person gets to serve the people wh elected them," Ahilesh has said them.
Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya too will be required to vacate, an OBC seat of Phulpur from where he is an MP. The other deputy minister Dinesh Sharma, who was also the Lucknow mayor, has tendered his registration as mayor.
