Karnataka: The face of Lingyat community leader BS Yeddyurappa has been pardoned and can earn the immunity with BJP's central leadership standing-by his side amid a conflict that can tear the party's Karnataka unit apart.
BJP leaders on Saturday decided to take action against the four senior functionaries from both the factions in what was seen as a tough measure to resolve the intra-party feud between Yeddyurappa and former state unit chief KS Eshwaeappa.
The came after when BJP general secretary Muralidhar Rao also the in-charfe for Kartnataka, arrived in Bangalore to hold prayers with both sides. "This is a big victory for Yeddyurappa and a setback for Santosh," a close aide of the Lingayat strongman said.
The rivalry between the two factions goes back to 2008, when Yeddyurappa was the chief minister and Santosh was the BJP's "sangathan mantra" for Karnataka. The RSS leader had even opposed Yeddyurappa's entry into the party ahead of the Lok Sabha election.
Yedyuraappa's critic's in the party finally felt confident enough to strike when the Congress pulled down BJP in the the bypolls to two assembly seats in Karnataka recently. They accused him of running the party like a "private company" by not consulting other senior members.
However, Karnataka became the first southern state get a BJP government in 2008. The state is scheduled to go on polls in May next year.
