Can BJP manage to implement its Gorkhaland promise?

Tahlka News Bureau

New Delhi: The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJM) promised the issue of Gorkhaland during its 2014 Election to gain an edge in the Darjeeling parliamentary constituency without making it a key point in the manifesto in order to expand itself towards West Bengal by launching a violent agitation in the hills to gain votes.

The saffron party wants to deliver its promises of separate Gorkhaland state. "Bengal is just a chowkidar (watchman) of Gorkhaland, and its time for its retirement. The West Bengal assembly will never pass it (resolution for creation of a separate state), the Centre will have to do it on its won. We ensured victory for the BJP (in Darjeeling) in 2009 and 2014. This issue is part of its manifesto too. The BJP chief Bimal Gurung said.

The BJP is suggesting to carve out the Gorkhaland issue in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, making a mention in the poll manifesto. Hours after releasing the document through, it wa compelled by the GJM to issue a late night statement, saying, "Further to election manifesto of the BJP released today… the BJP reiterates that it will sympathetically examine and appropriately consider the long-pending demands of the Gorkhas, the Adivasis and other people of Darjeeling district and the Dooars region."

With negligible presence in West Bengal, the BJP depended entirely on the GJM's support to win the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat.

However, the saffron party have made significant gains in the former Left baston I the past two years – emerging as the principal challenger to the ruiling Trinamool Congress. The BJP cannot ill-afford to be seen as a party supporting the bifurcation of West Bengal even it was in favor of smaller states. Those living in Darjeling are scared.

Union minister and Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia has written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, asking him to examine the demand.
