NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has ordered for six month jail term to former Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan after refusing his request to suspend the sentence given to him by top court in May. He was arrested in Tamil Nadu yesterday night. Justice (retired) Karnan was underground a month ago in order to dodge arrest and has claimed that he is being prosecuted because he is a Dalit.
His lawyer sought bail in Supreme Court today but was rejected. After he lands in Kolkata today, escorted by senior Bengal police officers, he will be taken to the city's Presidency Jail.
The Supreme Court has banned the press from reporting its remarks and ordered him to jail early in May after declaring him guilty of contempt of court. The 62-year-old became the first serving judge to be sentenced to prison. His sentence was deviled by a bench of seven judges along with Chief Justice of India JS Khehar.
While evading arrest, the former High Court judge's term ended, and he said false names to hide in resorts and switched cellphones to avoid being tracked down.
Justice (retired) Karnan wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee accusing several senior judges of corruption, after his transfer from Chennai to Kolkata in January last year.
In response the Supreme Court asked him to appear before the court in person. He compiled once, then kipped other hearings.
He later, for every order issued by the Supreme Court on his case, passed a counter order, even at one point, ordering the arrest o fthe top court's judges. He also refued to g under any mental health tests despite the Supreme Court's suggestion, saying "I am fine, I an normal."
