MP government announces Rs 1 crore to farmers killed in protest in Madasaur, blames Congress

Bhopal: At least five people killed and several others were injured in Madhya Pradeh's Mandsaur district on Tuesday in police firing on protesters demanding for better prices in the drought hit region that recorded suicide every five hours in 2016-17.


Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan have announced that each deceased farmer's families will get Rs 1 crore and a government job will be provided to one member from their families. This comes after he announced Rs 10 lakh for each of the farmers families earlier on Tuesday.


The incident can also impact assembly elections in neighboring Gujarat, Modi's home state, as four of the five farmers killed were Patidars, an influential community that has backed the BJP for decades but ha in recent years shifted support.

"The BJP came to power with the promise of welfare of farmers and poor... All that the farmers were demeaning was held from the government an in return they received bullet,"


Chauhan have also accused the Congress for creating the rucks in Mandsaur saying its a "conspiracy filling by Congress" and the government was sensitive to the need of the farmers and stands with them.

"Our government has done a lot for farmers. Congress has conspired to turn this peaceful protest into violence."


Congress Vice President took to Twitter on the deaths of the two farmers in Mandasaur and said the government is "at war" with the countries farmers. He will also visit Mandasaur on Wednesday.




Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh condemned the death of farmers of the deaths of farmers in Mandasaur and blamed the Shivraj Sigh Government for not meeting the genuine demands of the farmers.






Several farmers organisations called a stateside shutdown on Wednesday. Congress said it will support the strike.



Madhaya Pradesh is considered a BJP bastion where the saffron party is in power for 14 years. The government has been facing huge protests by farmers who say they cannot afford to sell produce at below-par prices for a third straight season and want the administration to create a safety net.
