Presidential election 2017: Meira Kumar files nomination papers against Ram Nath Kovind, Today

New Delhi: Congress' Presidential candidate Meira Kumar filed her nomination papers for the upcoming July 27 election today, and is all set to beat the heat for the country's top post.

Meira's candidacy is backed by a number of opposition parties including the Rashtyraya Janata Dal (RJD), Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP).

She is the first woman Lok Sabha Speaker and also a five-time MP as well as an IFS officer. She entered her political career entered electoral politics in 1985 when she joined Congress. She is the daughter of prominent Dalit leader Jagjivan Ram, also known as Babuji,was an an independence activist and politician from Bihar, and has won against many dalit leader like Ram Vilas Paswan and Mayawati to win in Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, senior party leaders, chief ministers such as Amrindar Singh, Virbhadra Singh and Siddaramaiah were present as Kumar submitted her nomination papers.


The former Lok Sabha speaker will be facing the NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, who was earlier the Governor of Bihar. Kovind' same was announced by BJP President Amit Shah last week and have since became a topic of discussion among the masses. Other parties like BD, TDP and TRS and AIADMK have came forward in its support. Both Kumar and Kovind hails from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh respectively, and interestingly both belong to Dalit community.


Although, earlier on Tuesday, Kumar said "cast identification" should not play a role in election to the high office. She said the contest has become a battle of ideologies and has questioned the society's mindset for portraying it as a Dalit vs Dalit fight.

"Prior to this elections for this post took place many a time there were candidates from the so-called upper castes. But there was no discussion on their casts. I don'y remember their being any debate about their castes," she said.


She said that the unity of opposition is based on common ideology. "You all are aware of the current times, Meira Kumar said.

"I am thankful to all the 17 parties who supported my nomination," Kumar said. "The unity of Opposition parties is based on common ideology. They are based on social justice, democratic ideals, freedom of press, end to poverty and castism."

"These principals are close to my heart" she said.


"Against the ideology of diverseness she represents the values that bind us as a nation. Proud to have @meira_kumar ji as our candidate," Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi Tweeted.
