Varanasi:�President Pranab Mukherjee is all set to perform aarti at Dashaswamedh Ghat in Varanasi on May 13 as part of his Varanasi visit.
The President will spend around an hour as a VIP pilgrim and participate in Ganga Saptami celebrations at Dashaswamedh Ghat and will later pay obeisance at the Kashi Vishwanath temple.
The President will arrive at the Banaras Hindu University on the afternoon of May 12 to attend the varsity's centennial year function during evening.
According to the ADM Protocol office, President Mukherjee would stay at the varsity guest house for the night and will reach the Dashaswamedh Ghat at 6am, on the auspicious occassion of Ganga Saptami, which means rebirth of Goddess Ganga.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple's chief executive officer MP Singh said that during the president's visit inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, he would offer 'rudrabhishek', 'dugdhabhishek' and 'jalabhishek' amid the chanting of mantras by 11 priests.
After the completion of all rituals, the President will leave for BHU campus to board his chopper for the airport.
The other VIP pilgrim who will be performing the same rituals along with President Mukherjee include Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar.
Pt. Shrikant Mishra who is hosting the event told that as per the religious scriptures and belief, the Ganga first descended to earth on the occasion of 'Ganga Dussehra'. However, Ganga's water was swallowed by sage Jahnu. The Gods had to then plead to the sage, following which he released Ganga once again on the day of Saptami of Shukla Paksha of the Vaishakh month as per the Hindu calendar. The day has since been known as 'Ganga Saptami' or 'Ganga Utapatti'
