Chennai: V.K. Sasikala Natarajan, close aide of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, formally took over as the general secretary of the AIADMK on Saturday.She became the second woman leader to lead the party after Jayalalithaa. On Thursday, the AIADMK general council appointed Ms. Sasikala as general secretary. She will be the interim general secretary till she is formally elected to the post. Sasikala Natarajan was unanimously chosen to lead the AIADMK at a party meeting on Thursday. In today's address, Sasikala said Jayalalithaa had struggled for 75 days - a reference to her hospitalisation - but that the Almighty had called his beloved child to him.
She said she'd been with Jayalalithaa since she was 29, and that the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was her "life." Sasikala also said she will follow Jayalalithaa's directions while leading the AIADMK. She added that the party's cadre were its strength, and expressed confidence that they will support her.
The new AIADMK chief today announced that former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK founding father M G Ramamchandran' s centenary birth anniversary celebrations will be organised throughout the year. Also the AIADMK will demand the Centre to release a stamp and commemoration coin in honour of 'MGR,' she said.
During her 23 -minute speech, she broke down several times. She thanked everyone for making her the general secretary and promised to lead the party in the right direction �till her last breath�.
